The CSS Profile
The CSS Profile is a separate form used mainly by private colleges and a handful of others to award their own institutional aid. It asks for a more detailed picture of your finances, including things the FAFSA does not, and unlike the FAFSA it usually charges a fee, with waivers available for lower-income families.
Check each school's financial aid page for exactly which forms it requires and the deadlines. Missing the CSS Profile at a school that requires it can cost you thousands in institutional aid, even if your FAFSA is perfect.
